Transfer Your Domain to Go Daddy – It’s Easy!

You registered a domain last fall. You were so excited; it was the first domain you ever registered. Then, you found Go Daddy, and you really got into it! You now have 10 domain names, a Web site, and a blog. Congratulations! But what you really want is that first domain listed in your account at Go Daddy, not sitting all by itself at another registrar. You can do that, you know – with a simple domain transfer! Domain transfers move the registration of your domain (and the management of settings like name servers) from one registrar to another. When you transfer a domain to us, you can manage all your domains in one place, plus get a free year of registration, email, hosting, and lots of cool stuff. There are 4 steps to transferring a domain to us – watch closely:
  1. Perform a WHOIS search, and locate the email address listed for the domain’s administrative contact. We use this address to send information critical to the transfer. If you can’t receive the email, you can’t transfer the domain... simple as that. If it’s not correct or if it has privacy and the address is not published, contact your current registrar and remove the privacy or change the address.  Give it 48 hours once the correct email address is in place.
  2. Log into your account with us and purchase a domain transfer through our Web site.
  3. Go to your current registrar, unlock the domain (the lock prevents unauthorized transfers), and ask for the authorization (or EPP) code.
  4. Use the codes in that important email mentioned above, plus the authorization code from your current registrar, to complete authorization of the transfer. You must have both! The email tells you how. See how important that email is?
Approximately 5-7 days after authorization, if nothing goes wrong, your domain is activated in your Go Daddy account.

What can go wrong? Not much, but there can be glitches. First, if you registered or renewed the domain or you changed the registrant or company name in the last 60 days, it can’t be transferred now.  You’ll have to wait until the 60 days are up. If the domain you’re trying to transfer has a country code extension (if it’s a ccTLD like .co, .uk,  or .es), we may not support the transfer or it may require a different procedure. If you have problems buying the transfer, give us a call and we’ll investigate. If you’re stuck, we’re happy to help. We even have a Transfer Concierge to get you on your way: 480-505-8866 or concierge@secureserver.com.

I started the process of transferring a dozen or so domains to GoDaddy. It was my understanding that if you transfer more than five domains privacy is available at no charge. But when I got to the checkout point it said there was a charge for privacy for each domain. Why?

Privacy registration is free for the first year for domain transfers to Go Daddy when you include 5 or more domain transfers on a single order and choose the privacy option before checkout.  If you chose to add years of registration (beyond the 1 year awarded as part of the transfer fee) to the domains you are transferring, the privacy charges for the second and subsequent years of privacy would be charged for each domain at checkout time. In the shopping cart list, privacy is shown with its actual price and then is discounted in the item extension if prerequisites are met.  If this information doesn’t answer the issue you are having, give our support team a call (480-505-8877) so that they can investigate the issue for you.

I recently transfered two .ES domains to GoDaddy and wish I hadn't. I didn't read the fine print where it said .ES domains are exempt from the 1 year extention. My receipt even says ".ES Domain Name Transfer - 1 Year, Length 1 year" When I called support to see why my domains weren't extended a year they pointed out the small print and said "it doesn't matter what the receipt says." I could have saved $30 and not have transferred them to GoDaddy. Why pay $14.95 per domain to get nothing? Now I'm forced to either pay another domain service to transfer away from GoDaddy or pay for another year with a bad taste in my mouth.

Thank you for your comment. We cannot extend .es domain registration when transferring the domain to us because of .es registrar restrictions. Since we are limited by the registry, we've posted a disclaimer for these domains on the transfer page when referring to the free year. Our apologies for any confusion.

OMG! I can not tell you how technically challenged I am. I have a blog that I purchased a domain name www.mysticfeather.com from blogger.com and I want to transfer the domain to GoDaddy.com I purchased the transfer, got all the way to the point where I need the authorization code, but I can't find out how to get it from Blogger.com. Ugggh! I try their "help" link and it only shoots me to articles (none of which are related to my issue) I type in unlock domain and I get articles about people's blog that are going to spam. I give up! Doesn't GoDaddy.com have a special link for the disabled customer like myself?????

Thanks for your question. Blogger.com works through Google.com for their domain name registrations. A search on the Web indicates the email address to contact there is gdomains@secureserver.net. They should be able to assist you with retrieval of your authorization code and unlocking your domain. If you get stuck again, give us a call (480-505-8877) or you can work with our Transfer Concierge (480-505-8866).
